MAC Cosmetics was started in Toronto,
Canada in 1984 as Make-up Art Cosmetics by locals Frank Toskan and
Frank Angelo. Toskan was a photographer and makeup Artist, and Angelo
the owner of a hair salon. They both recognised the need for
professional cosmetics products that would that would retain their
integrity under the intense glare of high-powered lights found on
professional photography shoots. In 1984 the two launched the line from
a single counter in the basement of Simpson's department store in
Toronto. In 1995 The Estée Lauder Companies which planned to
expand its sales abroad, acquired a controlling interest of 51%, but
the two founders retained creative control. Also in 1994 the MAC AIDS
Fund, a foundation dedicated to helping people living with HIV and
AIDS, was established. One year prior to the Estée Lauder
Companies finalised acquisition of the company in 1998, original
co-founder Frank Angelo died from cardiac arrest after surgery in 1997.
